BERLIN, July 7, 2026 – Today, ZULA Kids announces the release of the new picture book, „We Were Wanderers.“ Designed for children ages eight to twelve, the story provides a gentle exploration of displacement, historical responsibility, and the search for home.
Inspired by true events, „We Were Wanderers“ follows a young Jewish family forced to flee Nazi Germany to begin a new life in Shanghai. The book introduces young readers to the history of the Holocaust in an age-appropriate way, emphasizing essential values such as empathy, resilience, and humanity. The narrative serves as a vital resource for caregivers, educators, and teachers, offering a meaningful framework to discuss the history of refugees, human rights, and the enduring power of connection.
„This story makes an important chapter of history accessible to children,“ says Wenling Huang, the book’s author. „We want to show that kindness, hope, and love can endure even in the darkest moments.“
The narrative is written by journalist and author Wenling Huang. The warm and expressive illustrations were created by illustrator and graphic designer Sayali Ghotikar. This release is part of the publisher’s 12 new titles created during the annual Book-A-Thon, a mentoring initiative dedicated to providing a platform for creators from underrepresented communities and supporting them in bringing their creativity into the world.
