A Milestone for Diversity and Representation in Publishing
BERLIN, July 7, 2026 – Today, ZULA Kids announces the official launch of a special new picture book collection. A total of 12 new titles are being released simultaneously, marking a significant commitment to inclusion, empathy, and belonging in children’s literature. All works were created through the annual “Book-A-Thon” – a mentoring initiative by ZULA dedicated to providing a platform for creators from underrepresented communities to share their stories and illustrations with the world.
Stories Where Every Child Sees Themselves The new releases cover a wide spectrum of themes essential for child development and a healthy sense of self: from cultural identity and bilingual experiences to resilience, social-emotional learning, and navigating new beginnings. Whether it is “Xyka and Mliha,” which explores the healing power of connection, or “Pendo, so wie du bist,” which empowers children in their uniqueness, all books share the goal of giving a voice to children from all walks of life.
“Our mission is to challenge the status quo of publishing,” explains Janine Vanessa Heinrich, Co-Founder of ZULA Kids. “We are proud to publish these 12 books, which do not just entertain but build bridges and provide children with the validation that their experiences are important and valuable.”
The Book-A-Thon: Mentoring and Platform
What connects these 12 new titles is their creative process. The Book-A-Thon is more than a funding program; it is a mentoring initiative dedicated to providing a platform for creators from underrepresented communities and supporting them in bringing their creativity into the world. Through the direct exchange between authors, illustrators, and the accompanying mentors, works are created that captivate with their authentic, diverse perspectives.
